WORLD SPACE WEEK 2025 CELEBRATION

The African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (ARCSSTE-E) joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2025 World Space Week themed “Living in Space” on Thursday October 9, 2025 in its Space Museum situated at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Campus, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The occasion was graced by the Executive Director of ARCSSTE-E, Engr. Dr. Seyi F. Olatoyinbo ably represented by Dr. Olakunle R. Oladosu (Head, Atmospheric and Allied Sciences, ARCSSTE-E). 

 

Also, in attendance were: Dr. Joshua J. Iliya (Director, Cooperative Information Network (COPINE)), Prof. Nathaniel O. Adeoye (Dept. of Geography, OAU) Alh. Abdulraheem Shuaib (Head, Finance & Accounts, ARCSSTE-E), Dr. Felix N. Buba (Head of Academic Programmes. ARCSSTE-E), and Dr. Samuel Anih (Head, Space Education and Outreach Programmes (SEOP), ARCSSTE-E), among other invited dignitaries. The opening remark was given by Dr. Samuel Anih, who welcomed the guests, members of staff and particularly, the secondary school students and teachers present. He gave an overview of the theme of the programme and assured them of a fun-filled learning experience.

The Director encouraged the students to be attentive and open-minded as the dream of exploring and living in space begins on Earth. He also called their attention to the fact that every great astronaut, scientist, or innovator once started with curiosity, excitement and load of ideas. He further urged them not just to learn about space but to experience it, imagine it, and be inspired to make their mark among the stars. Goodwill messages were also given by Dr. Joshua Iliya, Prof. Nathaniel Adeoye and Alh. Abdulraheem Shuaib respectively, encouraging the students to avail themselves of the best of the opportunity provided by the 2025 World Space Week Celebration.

The first presentation was given by Dr. Oluwatosin Ogundolie on “Living in Space”. She eloquently described the living conditions of the astronauts in space, their work, eating habit, sleeping pattern and some of the challenges posed by the space environment. She assured the students, that no matter the field they venture into, they can be relevant in the Space Exploration and Endeavours. 

Dr. Olaniran Aluko, in his presentation, enumerated the advantages that living in space can afford mankind. He cited some examples that the students could relate to, such as the satellites that help with our communication network and weather forecast. He also mentioned some resources that could be harnessed from outer space and how humanity is working towards literarily living in space in the nearest future.

The interactive session was very engaging as many of the students asked interesting questions to which the SEOP Team Members competently answered. It was obvious the students were captivated by the two presentations. Afterwards, a set of time-based quiz was administered to the students to further test their attentiveness and acquired knowledge.

Shortly before the lunch break, the students from Love and Joy Secondary School, Ilesha, Osun State gave a short drama presentation on living in space, where they beautifully captured the lifestyle and achievements of the Space Enterprise

After the lunch break, the best three (3) schools in the poster competition were given the opportunity to present their works. Then, all participating students were given materials and guided on how to make a mock-up satellite, which was done practically on-site to enhance hands-on experience.

All participating schools were issued their Certificates of Participation while the best three (3) students in the quiz competition were presented with gifts. Finally, for the poster presentation, Love and Joy Secondary School, Ilesha, Osun State were presented the 3rd Place Award, while the Islamic College, Osogbo, Osun State won the 2nd Place Award. The 1st Place Award was won by the Progress Comprehensive High School, Modakeke, Osun State.

Over One Hundred and Twenty students and teachers, comprising of twenty-three (23) secondary schools, two of which attended virtually, actively participated in the 2025 World Space Week. Also in attendance were the Management and Staff of ARCSSTE-E and the members of staff of Cooperative Information Network (COPINE), a Zonal Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) located within OAU Campus, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.
