The African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (ARCSSTE-E), located within Obafemi Awolowo University Campus, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria commemorated Yuri’s Night 2026 in a grand style; a global celebration of space exploration observed annually on April 12. The event honours the historic spaceflight of Soviet Cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into space aboard Vostok 1 spacecraft on April 12, 1961.
The celebration brought together the Centre’s Management, staff and their family members, University students, cohorts of the Obafemi Awolowo University Space Club, and other invited guests in a vibrant atmosphere that blended education, inspiration, and cultural appreciation of space science and exploration.
The programme commenced with an opening remark by Dr. Samuel Anih (Head, Space Education and Outreach Programmes – SEOP), who emphasized the significance of Yuri’s Night as a global initiative aimed at stimulating interest in space exploration and inspiring future generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.

Mr. Samam Obaguo (Head, Administration & Human Resources) delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Centre’s Director, Engr. Dr. Seyi F. Olatoyinbo. He expressed appreciation to all attendees and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to advancing space science and technology education across the Anglophone African countries.

A keynote presentation was delivered by Engr. Oluwatosin Ogundolie on the evolution of human spaceflight. The presentation traced major milestones from the first manned mission to contemporary advancements in space technology, while highlighting the enduring impact of Yuri Gagarin’s historic journey into space.
The event also featured an interactive session during which participants engaged members of SEOP with questions on space missions, career opportunities in space science, and the relevance of emerging technologies in space exploration. Subsequently, the President of the OAU Space Club, Mr. Daniel Ogala, created awareness about the Club’s activities and encouraged individuals with a passion for innovation to join, irrespective of age, gender, field of study or academic discipline.

As part of the programme, a space-related movie, Project Hail Mary, was screened for participants. This was followed by a call to action delivered by Dr. Adebayo Ojo (Head, Postgraduate Programmes), who encouraged students to pursue careers in science, particularly in space-related fields. The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Baba Shaibu, who appreciated all contributors and participants for making the event a huge success.

The programme concluded with a stargazing session led by Dr. Olaleye Salu, during which participants observed stars and galaxies through the Centre’s telescope, providing a practical and memorable experience of the wonders of space.
