The United Nations African Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (UN-ARCSSTEE) recently hosted a comprehensive three-day 3D Printing and Design Training Workshop, from Tuesday 12th of November, 2024 to Thursday, 14th November 2024 at its Remote Sensing & GIS Class located within the Obafemi Awolowo University Campus, Ile-Ife.

The training aimed at empowering participants with hands-on skills in operating the Flashforge 3 Lite 3D printer which Mrs. Oluwabunmi Beatrice Falaju, a Principal Technologist from the Department of Electrical Electronics Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, facilitated

The workshop began with a foundational session on 3D printing technology. Mrs. Falaju introduced participants to the overview of 3D printing technology, the fundamentals, applications, benefits and limitations of 3D printing. Also, the Flashforge 3 Lite Printer and its features, its specifications, alongside a step-by-step guide to unboxing, setup, and safe operation were given. In addition, participants were trained on how to use FlashPrint and FreeCAD software for preparing and slicing 3D models, and hands-on practicals with Ultimaker Cura for optimal print settings. The hands-on activities included setting up the printer, loading filament, running test prints, and troubleshooting common issues.

The training also included advanced 3D printer operations, covering areas such as printer maintenance which involves routine tasks like cleaning and calibration to ensure the longevity of the printer. The participants were divided into four groups where they applied their newly acquired skills to real-world projects, designing and printing unique 3D models, including an earring created by one of the teams.
The two-day workshop successfully equipped participants with a robust understanding of 3D printing technology, practical skills for operating the Flashforge 3 Lite printer, and troubleshooting techniques for common issues. This training underscores UN-ARCSSTEE’s commitment to fostering technological skills and innovation in Africa.
